The Inmates Are Running The Asylum
Back in 2003, Ted Kennedy lobbied the Massachusetts state legislature to change the law mandating a special election should there come an open Senatorial seat in Congress. The rights of the people to choose by a vote for their replacement representative was of utmost importance. This was a blatant partisan shot at Mitt Romney who was the Governor at the time and oh, by the way, he was a Republican and the Senate seat in jeopardy was that of John Kerry. So Massachusetts did as he asked and stripped the Governor of the right to make a Senatorial appointment protecting the valuable and precious right of the peoples vote.
Fast forward to 2009 and Ted, in his last days, again lobbied the Massachusetts legislature to again change the law back to what it was before.Read my commentary here. This so the now Democrat Governor could appoint Ted’s wife as his successor should he die while in office. Well guess what? AP reports today:
BOSTON — The Massachusetts Senate has approved a bill allowing the governor to name an interim replacement for the late Sen. Edward Kennedy.
The bill goes back to both chambers for a final procedural vote on Wednesday before heading to Gov. Deval Patrick, who has said he would sign it.
Patrick’s aides say they expect him to act quickly to name an appointee. The replacement would serve until voters pick a permanent replacement Jan. 19.
Lawmakers have come under pressure from Washington to pass the bill so Democrats can regain a filibuster-proof majority in the Senate to help pass President Barack Obama’s health care overhaul.
I rest my case.
